  • The 3 leading causes of death in the United States are heart attacks, cancer and strokes, the risks of which can be reduced through early intervention and prevention.
  • 1 in 4 households involve care giving, which without adequate support and access to resources can lead to depression, exhaustion and increased risk of illness.
  • More than half of Americans suffer from one or more chronic diseases with treatment costs and productivity losses totaling over $277 billion per year.

Some 2008 Accomplishments

  • Saved millions of dollars in healthcare costs by promoting prevention and healthy living to at least 80,000 people in the Northwest and logged well over half a million miles in walking programs.
  • Trained 87 faith community nurses/health ministers in 7 classes held in Portland, Hillsboro, Bend, Albany and Eugene, OR, Tacoma, WA, and Anchorage, AK, totaling more than 2000 since 1992.
  • Exceeded the goals of a 2 year project by training 35 parish nurses as leaders of Powerful Tools for Caregiving who offered the class to almost 200 family caregivers with 12 classes still to be scheduled.
  • Hosted a Conference with Franciscan Health System, Providence Health and Services and Puget Sound Health Ministries in Gig Harb0r, WA with 240 in attendance.
  • Organized the third annual Humor and Health Fest attracting over 220 people and took steps to merge with Puget Sound Health Ministries.
